BMW Wheel Problems
When fitting 18 inch or above wheels to a BMW 5 series some vibration problems could be encountered. I have had my tyres on my own BMW balanced and rebalanced numerous times. Only to discover that after even a day the vibration is back again, even when I thought it had helped. Then when the fault started to appear when braking I was thrown down the route of thinking it was the brake discs that were at fault and when the MOT came around the front brake discs had to be changed anyway because they were just under the legal limit. After replacing the discs and pads the vibration issue was still there.
It was said to me that the track control arms are normally the trouble that makes the car pull to the left when braking and no doubt the cause of the vibration. So I decided to change both items. Next thing that was tried was swapping the front wheels with rear wheels and visa versa, and also checking the wheels were not buckled. This didn’t appear to help much.
Many of the BMW 5 series aftermarket E39 wheels today are said to be suited to fit both the BMW E39 and the E34 models. If you go to the shops they will tell you there is no difference. On view you will find the hubs on the E34 models are alot smaller than the E39 model, meaning that the shims supplied with the wheels are not much use. I have tried three different styles of wheels on my BMW E34 with the same vibration issue , one was the MV style type 1 BMW wheels. Then I went to the TSW Viper style wheels that had the same problem, then I got some replica Ac Schnitzer 18 inch wheels.
When looking through eBay one day I came across some metal shims that were suited for the E34 to fit E39 wheels to it. The shims were then fitted and the vibration trouble then disappeared. I have only seen these shims advertised on Ebay under the BMW alloy wheel section but you may be able to find them elsewhere as well.
