Speed limiters are about to be made compulsory for all Commercial Vans in the EU

A leading member of the European Parliament is asking that vans should be limited to 75mph by equipping them with mandatory limiters . Martin Callanan would like to see the new law in power across the EU by 2015 even though cialis buying it is not something supported by all of his colleagues .

The MEP’s suggestion is contained in a 17 -page initial report on van CO2 discharge he has authored for the parliament’s environment board .

Such a step would restrict light commercials to travelling at slightly above the national UK speed restriction so in theory the impact on drivers would be modest . In reality , however, it would be considerable given how many habitually smash the restriction , and of course the law , frequently on double carriageways and highways .

Increasing numbers of  operators are already voluntarily installing speed controllers on their vans , says Gerry Clarke, United Kingdom director of Fiat Professional, Fiat’s light commercial operation. “We can offer a choice of ways of regulating the engine management system to this end that cannot be changed by the driver,” he says.

Clearly safety is a key reason for introducing such devices, says Clarke. Another cause , however, is the need to minimize fuel usage . The use of speed controllers is also likely to help in drivers incurring fewer speeding fines.

Environment board members are set to vote on steps to minimize commercial vehicle CO2 emissions in September, with fines in store for vehicle produces whose products do not succeed to meet whatever restrictions are agreed .

The policy governing the operation of light commercials look set to become rigid over the coming years. Among measures being supported aside from speed limiters are the lowering of the O licensing threshold from 3.5 to 2.8 tonnes and making Class 7 light commercials, ie those grossing at from 3.0 to 3.5 tonnes, subject to an yearly MoT from their date of first registration.
